Printers

My wife is a middle grades teacher and the copiers at her school are always broken are in use by someone else, so we do all her printing and copying at home - LOTS of printing and copying. I really like the speed and the automatic duplexing. We expect to cut our paper cost by 30-40%. We also create a pdf of each assignment/worksheet to upload to her website so students can get any missed assignments. The scanner - scan to file - option allows you to specify pdf file type and is very fast.

The Automatic Document Feed is excellent with no jams so far even with large documents. We also print hall/bathroom passes on business card stock using the single sheet feeder with no jams. So far we have printed about 5,000 pages and have had no real problems. Setting up the network for sharing the printer was very easy. We expect to print about 5,000 pages per month - well under the 25,000 duty clcle. Our previous MFC 8220 is still being used by a colleague after 3 drum... Read more

I gave 4 stars instead of 5 for the following reasons:
1) Scanning from the ADF is slower than I expected once you get past the first page.
2) The printer memory can be easily upgraded with up to 512 MB. However, the memory module is a 144-pin PC100/133 SO-DIMM. This is very out of date memory. You would think that out of date memory would be dirt cheap but it is not. Compare prices and you will find that it costs about as much as 4 GB of the very latest memory because very few manufacturers still produce it and very few retailers stock it. Even if that memory is more than adequate for the printer's needs, Brother should still use something more modern to keep the costs down.

I have a network with machines running Windows Vista, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Ubuntu 9.04 Linux. This printer worked with all three operating systems with no tweaking at all. In fact, the only headache was that the Windows software provided by Brother... Read more

I owned the 1st gen. of the Brother MFC printer. This is my second Brother MFC. This one is generation 3. My original Brother MFC lasted about 5 years. I hope they worked out the bugs out of this one. It works just as good at the original one but it's one does 32ppm and have more built in memory. My 1st gen has scanner lock issues and ADF started giving me issues. The high yield toner is TN-650 (8000 pages). It's expensive toner but it lasts very long for the toner. It's toner is also bigger than many other printers. Check that out if the price is what you need in features before buying. I was hoping Amazon sold it when I was buying it so I could have purchased it from Amazon.

Pros:
- The best ADF that I have seen for a while.
- Doesn't jam much.
- Features. I looked at HP, Sharp, Canon, Lexmark, Minolta and can't find any printer that comes close to the features and abilities of this printer. Too features much to list, read Brother's website. Even supports... Read more

I am old enough to remember buying premium gasoline (ethyl, it was called) for 13 cents per gallon. That was when I started college 50 years ago.

Now, I often tell the folks at the meat counter at the grocery store that it's not that I can't afford the food, it's that I'M CHEAP!

Times have changed and prices have changed even more these last 50 years since I started college. One change is the advent of computers, printers and the outrageous RIP OFF PRICES of "genuine" HP ink cartridges.

These "remanufactured" cartridges work just fine. I see NO difference in performance, compared to HP "genuine" cartridges. The only thing is, when I press "print," the "ink level" advice screen shows "Not a genuine Hewett Packard ink cartridge." Well, PFFFFT on HP. I can buy TWO 3-packs (two PACKS of two black, one color) - six cartridges in all - for the price of ONE individual "genuine" HP cartridge. I may be Cheap but I'm not stupid.

Great alternative to buying in B&M store at exorbitant prices. (If you don't mind the wait - delivery)

The refurbished cartridges that were shipped to me worked perfectly right out of the packaging with no problems. I recently priced the new OEM cartridges and realized that I would have paid at least triple the price. As long as refurbished carts are available they will be my first choice.

I purchased this computer 2 weeks ago. I use computers everyday at work and have had home computers for years, but I am definitely no expert on them. This computer has been great! The set-up was really easy, it is fast, and my kids really love the Touch Smart screen and the different apps for it. I did have one slight problem when I first set up the unit though. According to the set-up directions, there is a receiver that plugs into the USB port that is supposed to receive the signal from the wireless mouse and keyboard. I looked everywhere for that thing and never found it. I finished the set-up process using the touchscreen. A while later I turned the mouse and keyboard on, just to see what would happen. Both the mouse and the keyboard work fine, so if you order this model you my want to keep that in mind. Other than that my experience has been very positive, and I would highly recommend this computer.

We've had this one about 3 weeks now, and we like it quite a bit. Our old one was at least ten years old and we've had 4 children since then. They like it- they only use the touchscreen which is very quick and responsive. I don't use it for much- facebook, weather, news, and printing the occasional coupon. I also download pics and videos off of our camera on it- the screen is so clear and bright- nice picture. I wish I knew more about computers and could give a better review, but it works fast for our needs, so we're happy.
One thing I don't like a lot is the cdrom tray? It comes out sideways and on the first day I told the kids they wer NOT allowed to touch it for anything- it looks as if it would easily break.
It did seem to come with some extra programs that I removed soon after I got it because we wouldn't need them. We already had Norton that it pressures you to buy at the beginning so of course we used that. The setup was extremely simple if I can do it with 4 kids... Read more

This particular computer was a lemon. We unpacked and set it up; connected to home network, added printer. In less than an hour the computer had froze/locked up approx. 5 times. Contacted HP Support, they were very helpful and they assisted with a series of system hardware/software tests and helped with a system recovery. Following the system recovery, the computer locked up two more times and the monitor was frozen with a striped, pixilated pattern. Contacted HP Support again and they said I would have to send in for repairs. They would not replace since the warranty is a repair warranty not a replacement warranty. Brand new computer, unacceptable! I checked Amazon's return policy and ID'd it for return just in time. We had purchased on Nov 28 as a Christmas gift for our kids. We bought early so we wouldn't run in to any problems with not being able to find what we wanted. Luckily we discovered this problem just before the 30 day return policy had expired. I had never...
